Samantha Fernando says ... The term ‘kinesphere’ was coined by choreographer Rudolf Laban and is defined as: the sphere around the body whose periphery can be reached by easily extended limbs without stepping away from that place which is the point of support when standing on one foot.
In partnership with London Sinfonietta we continue our Sinfonietta Shorts series, a collection of bite-sized pieces of new music from today's leading composers; commissioned and premiered by the principal players of the London Sinfonietta.
The first five Sinfonietta Shorts were premiered in 2008 to celebrate the ensemble's 40th birthday and since then the London Sinfonietta has commissioned many more. Each work has enduring relevance and is a great introduction to the best new music of our time. Pieces by Anna Meredith, Dai Fujikura, Mark Bowden, Jonathan Harvey and Harrison Birtwistle were released on NMC Recordings in 2013, with another eight scheduled in 2016.
