This release features a selection of commissions recorded live at the New Music Shows of 2011. Acclaimed baritone Leigh Melrose opens the album with Martin Suckling’s sublime Candlebird, an evocative setting of five texts by the Scottish poet Don Paterson. The remaining tracks were generated through the London Sinfonietta’s innovative Writing the Future scheme, in which composers make music in close collaboration with Principal players of the ensemble – three of whom feature here as soloists, in Edmund Finnis Veneer for viola and reverb, Tim Hodgkinson’s The Glow and Zig-Zag for horn, and Duncan MacLeod’s Diesis for double bass. Two works for quintet complete the line-up: Shiva Feshareki’s Valentine’s Rhapsody, and Zoetrope, Isambard Khroustaliov’s first purely acoustic score.
