By the sea is an audio-visual portrait of the sea, structured in three sections in which the observer’s gaze explores different elements: starting with the amorphous nature of the place, passing through its dynamic character in the second act, and finally reaching the feeling of holy intimacy in the last chapter.

The composer, Michele Deiana, describes it like this: “Living all my life between islands, I developed a particular affinity with the sea over the years. Constantly in connection with the water, I started experiencing my life as an endless flux of experience and I lived as a sailor would live their own hermitic joys and dramas. By the sea has the ambition of portraying the great sea, but retrospectively. Behind this objective lies the intention of creating a self-portrait.” Fellow composer Andrew Toovey describes it as “a beautiful collection of subtle and sustained pieces of music”.

Michele Deiana is an experimental, minimalist-driven Italian composer based in London. Conceiving composition as a multi-disciplinary activity, he creates hybrid works that move across the worlds of music, cinema, and theatre. His work focuses on fundamental aspects behind personally influential concepts or stories, translating them into intense, intimate and highly emotional artistic journeys.

"A truly forward-thinking composer, innovative in his transdisciplinary and collaborative
practice. An artist that perfectly embodies the mindset of the twenty-first century composer." PRXLUDES

His works have been performed and broadcast at Cheltenham Music Festival (UK), Spitalfields Music Festival (UK), RaiRadio3 (IT), La Biennale di Venezia (IT), Pinault Foundation (IT), MUTEK San Francisco (USA), Moving Body Festival (BG), Montréal International Festival of Films on Art (CA), ThinkThank Birmingham Science Museum (UK), Los Angeles Lift-Off Festival (USA) and Screen.Dance Festival (UK).
