This release launches the London Sinfonietta’s 6-volume Jerwood Series, focussing on recent works by young composers working in the UK. The series also celebrates the support the ensemble has given these composers: most of the works were commissioned by or written for the ensemble, and were recorded live at world or London premiere performances.
Stuart MacRae’s Interact is a trumpet concerto written for John Wallace and the London Sinfonietta. The virtuosity of the solo line is mirrored in the writing for the ensemble, in particular for the brass players who have prominent solos of their own. Of her work neon, Tansy Davies says: ‘neon consists of boxes. Each box contains a pattern or a groove: some are bright and shiny, others dark and grimy. All of the boxes can be fitted together, to interlock with each other in numerous ways.’ A heavy 70s-influenced clavinet sound on the synthesizer emphasizes the funky, dance-influenced soundworld.
