Release date: 27 September 2024
On 27 September 2024, NMC Recordings releases the digital-only album of Philharmonia Composers’ Academy Volume 7, featuring specially commissioned works by the participants of the Philharmonia’s 2023/24 Composers’ Academy programme.
Each year, Philharmonia commissions and supports emerging composers to create a new piece for an ensemble of Philharmonia musicians, which is premiered at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, as part of the Music of Today contemporary music series.
This album champions works by Yfat Soul Zisso, Florence Anna Maunders and Mathis Saunier and was recorded live on 02 June 2024 in a concert performance by the Philharmonia in Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, London.
Yfat Soul Zisso has been dedicated to her dream of becoming a composer ever since commencing her music studies at the relatively late age of 15. Her music, described as “daring and moving” (The Daily Telegraph), has been performed around the world. Her interests include the use of quartertones, as well as breathing as a musical idea. In addition to composing, Soul is also a singer, specialising in performing contemporary repertoire.
Florence Anna Maunders is a multi-international award-winning composer who studied at the Royal Northen College of Music. In 2018, after a long break, she returned to writing music, and has since enjoyed enormous global success. The violent and colourful collisions of styles and genres found in Florence’s music present “...energised, rough-edged juxtapositions...” (The Guardian) and “...a wonderful crescendo of just outright queer orchestration...” (Robert Timestra).
Mathis Saunier is a French composer, based in London. He is the artistic director, guitarist, and composer of the noise-pop band Mauvais Sang. He collaborates with international ensembles and is a Britten Pears Young Artist 2023/24. His musical universe is a fusion of electronic music (with
techno, ambient, and industrial influences) acoustics, and visual lighting, to which he attaches great importance. His music is performed in Europe and Canada.
